Martina's work communicates the 'invisible subject' of intersex people and the largely unknown processes of medical intervention at birth to 'rectify' gender. This process happens with little or no discussion or support later in life. The work takes the form of graphic communication that seeks to shed light on personal experience, lived experience as well as medical policy. Where the LGBTQ+ movement is highly visible with communities attached, the intersex experience is largely hidden. The work attempts to create a graphic language around these issues through publishing factual information and speculative fiction that reframes the potentials of being intersex, another mode of being that transcends binaries. As such the metaphor of quantum computing is appropriate, an imaginary that attempts to see beyond binary societal norms. The work will present printed material, objects and a new flag that celebrates complexity and gives a new visual form that a community might assemble around.
