Klara Kassman’s work offers a thoughtful and critical investigation into how materials are defined, valued, and discarded. Through weaving with waste materials alongside hemp, the Kassman makes the abstract realities of the waste crisis tangible. Rather than moralizing or seeking to “redeem” discarded matter, they approach materials as active and persistent, shaped by social systems that assign value and invisibility. Drawing on deconstruction and new materialist thinking, the work reveals how “waste” is not an endpoint, but a constructed category. What distinguishes Kassman is their ability to combine conceptual rigor with material sensitivity. Their practice positions craft as a form of care and maintenance—slowing processes down, exposing relationships, and encouraging responsibility without offering simplistic solutions.
