In her master thesis project ‘Matter of Place. Cocreating with the living’ Emelie Gibert explores biotic design and living building materials at the intersection of design, material science, biology and computation. Using cyanobacteria’s capacity of photosynthetic biomineralization together with shells from invasive Japanese oysters, Emilie proposes a material that absorbs and store carbon dioxide from the air, transforming it into calcium carbonate. The resulting material is a lightweight, porous and highly resistant mineral material that resemble coral bones or bivalve shells. As an alternative to concrete, a heavy emitter of carbon dioxide, the material is applied in facade panels able to absorb carbon dioxide continuously during a building’s life span - an elegant biotic interface providing protection, insulation and carbon capture and storage. Through this project and during her studies at the MA Design Ecologies Emilie Gibert has constantly grown as a designer and created proposals that demonstrate the possibilities of the emergent field of biodesign and design that acknowledges the impact and remedial potential of material cultures over ecosystems and biotic communities.
