Lindsay Baker’s mother Nancy was a single mum and a PE teacher. Like many women PE teachers of her generation, Nancy Baker had to fight hard for the implementation of Title IX at her school. Title IX, if you don’t know, is an American law from 1972 which prohibits “sex-based discrimination in any school or any other education program or activity that receives funding from the federal government”.
I know this because Lindsay’s degree project is about Title IX, its history and importance for girl athletes to become grown ass, mighty, victorious women athletes. Thanks to people like Nancy Baker.
Lindsay Baker’s degree project talks about Title IX and sports through fun, funny, pedagogic, accessible, and playful illustrations, and design. Lindsay is showing how the personal really is the political through a series of stories told by women athletes active in the 70s and 80s.
The project “Title IX” tells us to look back in awe. It is a cheerful and loving salute to the trailblazers who went before us. It is about Nancy Baker, by Lindsey Baker and for Ramona Baker, who is – from what I understand – nothing less than a third-generation game changer. Thank you, Lindsey!
